Gentlemen (and ladies reading this too)

Thank you for your continuing prayer support for our pastors and Arcade Church.

There are a few prayer opportunities most of you are not taking advantage of that we would like to remind you of:

Sunday morning at 6:15AM – Worship based prayer time for Jake, the morning services, the people attending, and all ministries that will be happening on campus that morning.

During each service, in the staff lunch room – Worship based prayer time to pray for the speaker of the morning, usually Jake, and all that is happening in and during the service.

There are many other opportunities for corporate prayer at Arcade. Please join in with one of these prayer times if you are not currently meeting with others for prayer on a regular basis.

Thanks,

Getting into Routine of Physical Therapy...
Nancy came home as expected and is getting into a routine of doing her physical therapy three times a day. Her therapist will come to the house Monday, Wednesday and Friday for a few weeks. She is very pleased with her progress. She said her right knee is stiff (I'm still experiencing stiffness in my left knee after my last surgery 8 months ago) so this is pretty normal.

Continue to remember us in your prayers as we wait on Him for his leading and direction
The Koinonia Adult Fellowship is supplying evening meals for a couple of weeks so this is very helpful and appreciated. I haven't burned anything down yet and no food poisoning as of yet.

Pray that Nancy will get her rest during the day; also her back is still borrowing her. We're hoping this improves with more time and therapy. The surgeon actually made one of Nancy's legs longer so we're praying that this will help her back.

Thanks again for your prayers and concern...............Ric

  Humility - What's Inside? - March 14, 2007
If pride is a common and dangerous vice, then humility is the remedy or corresponding virtue. How does one practice the virtue of humility? And can one practice it without committing the opposite vice and become prideful about it?

Sometimes we think that humility requires poverty or a low station in life--cleaning bathrooms or a trash collector. Lest you think I'm knocking those jobs, both my mother and I have both been cleaning women--she for many more years than my summer or student jobs. My husband is a blue collar worker. But humility really has little to do with one's job or social class or wealth or lack of it. A humble person has no hint of condemning others in their life or spirit. That probably knocks most of us out of the line up for a "humble prize." (Although, most of us have eaten humble pie often enough that we could line up for that prize.)

It is almost impossible to judge humility from the outside. Only as individuals do we know what goes on in our minds as we relate to and meet other people. Another way of putting it is, a humble person puts the needs of others first. Unfortunately, this is difficult for most of us. We have been around the block and know that no one, ultimately, will look out for us. We have to be prepared to work for what we get. Neither is it good to be a doormat--used by others, never standing up for ourselves. So how can we balance that with also putting the needs of others first? There are lots of fine lines here.

Perhaps St. Paul puts it in good perspective as he writes in his book in the New Testament to his friends at Philippi, "Do nothing from selfishness or conceit, but in humility count others better than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests but also to the interests of others" (Philippians 2:3). Even Paul recognizes this dual need: to look out for your own interests, but also for the interests of others.

I'm always bemused by people who like to be last for dinner at a buffet or potluck meal where one has to stand in line. At first glance it appears to be a very humble move--but it too can be a source of pride! As the men at the back of the potluck shuffle around trying to be last, they actually draw more attention to themselves then if they'd just go ahead and get in line. Not to pick on anyone!

And what about the front of the line? No one wants to be first in line for the food, maybe because of false humility. Not wanting to look like a pig. (Children of course have no qualms about lining up first.) And so people hem and haw about not getting in line first, holding up the whole process, when it would expedite things if someone just quietly went ahead and got in line.

So humility, as we have seen, is not easy to determine. It is a matter of the heart, not what appears on the outside. Since I already confessed in my last column that pride is a problem for me, obviously I'm not standing in line for the humility prize.

In wrapping up this special series on Vices and Virtues, perhaps you'll also appreciate this "Humility Prayer," which I found through a link at the website of blues singer Michael Powers, but I assume with an unknown author:

God, I am far too often influenced by what others think of me. I am always pretending to be either richer or smarter or nicer than I really am. Please prevent me from trying to attract attention. Don't let me gloat over praise on one hand or be discouraged by criticism on the other. Nor let me waste time weaving imaginary situations in which the most heroic, charming, witty person present is myself. Show me how to be humble of heart, like you. Amen.

Nancy is being discharged from Sutter Oaks - TODAY
Today (Tuesday 3/13) Nancy is being discharged from Sutter Oaks. She has progressed very well. She was able to bend both of her knees to 94 degrees yesterday. She had to be at least 90 to be discharged. Continue to pray for us as now Nancy will have to do her physical therapy at home for a few weeks a Visiting Nurse will come to the house 2-3 times a week for several weeks. Then Nancy will have to go downtown for physical therapy for several weeks 2-3 times a week. Pray that she'll be faithful to do her exercises and that I'll be an encouragement to her as well as a helpler when needed.

We do so appreciate all your prayers and encouragement. Nancy had so many visitors the front desk wanted to know who is this Nancy Fiol (Tiney told them she was a celebrity). A couple of days she had 7 visitors. She received flowers, a bunch of get well cards and many phone calls.
We're both thankful that she gets to come home and yet a little scared. Pray for the peace of God to reassure both of our hearts. We know that it's because of your prayers that Nancy has done so well. She said that if they would have tried to discharge last Friday or Saturday she didn't feel that she was ready. By Monday (yesterday) she is so much stronger and has real peace about coming home.

Thank you again and may the Lord richly bless you for your faithfulness in upholding us in prayer. Our God is great and I guess we shouldn't be surprised when things go better than expected..................Ric

  Nancy Fiol needs our Prayers

Nancy Fiol

As most of you know, Nancy, my wife, had bi-lateral knee replacements last Tuesday (2/27). She was transferred from Sutter General Hospital to Sutter Oaks Midtown (a skilled nurse facility) on Saturday.

She is now going through physical therapy and this is the reason for our prayer request. Nancy is not experiencing any pain until they do the physical therapy. Nancy has a very high threshold of pain however due to her healing so quickly she is getting adhesions on her knees which need to be broken. So when she has therapy she's in a tremendous amount of pain which is causing her to cry -- they give her a pain pill 1/2 hr before therapy and she still is experiencing a lot of pain.

Your prayers are requested that very quickly these adhesions can be broken so she can advance with her therapy. She was able to bend her knees to 82 and 83 degrees today. The goal is 90. She's also concerned about me being alone at home -- I'm doing okay but sure do miss her. She prepared a bunch of meals which she froze so I just have to thaw them and reheat them. After 42 years of marriage you don't realize how much you depend on each other.

Anyway, your prayers are requested and we thank you for your prayers and concern........Ric Fiol

Notes: A Visit with Pastor Lee Toms
I went today with Rod Fendal over to visit Pastor Toms in St. Helena. It was good to see him again . . . it may very well have been my last time. He doesn't have long, say the doctors. He has outlived their expectations. That's because Lee is in the Hands of his Savior, not the surgent. His mind though was sharp!! And we had a very stimulating conversation! What a precious brother and friend he is!! What a jewel we have had in our midst ... shining in his own special and spiritually empowered way!

Pastor Toms made these statements:

Concerning Terrorism, he said:
"Terrorist are invisible. They are the unseen presence. Who is better able to deal with the unseen world than . . . the Church. It needs to mobilize itself against the unseen enemy of our souls."

"The Church needs to be mobilized to confront the unseen enemy (2Cor10:-4-5). Pray God will root out the enemy at the source. We must understand and become proactive in assailing the Gates of Hell . . . to set the captives free!"

Concerning his health, he said:
"The cancer is definitely going to kill me. But, The spiritual experiences have been absolutely transforming . . ."

In response to the question, "why haven't You taken me home?, the Lord told him: 'I have established a course for you, and when you have finished it, I will take you home.'"

The grace of God is mighty in Pastor Tom's life. In his spirit, he is remarkably strong, resolute and clear thinking! It was a joy to be in his presence and talk about things, listening to the grace and wisdom of God in his life.

You may know that Pastor Toms has written and now has published two books. And they are PRECIOUS!! Please order a copy for yourself and others. They are: Letters from Lillian, and the other is The Mantle of Ministry. Both were published by Pascoe Publishing, Karen Pascoe, publisher. You can go to www.pascoepublishing.com/ or go to Berean Bookstore and order it.

A prayer request about the books... pray for the distributing process. These are two outstanding books: one that has to do with the "practical and pastoral theology" of life between a husband and wife in ministry, and the other with the Mantle of Ministry itself. You will see that it was truly a shared calling that Lee and Lillian had together. Let's do everything we can to get the information out to as many people and distributors of Christian books that you know. ...Christian schools, Bible Colleges, Seminaries, Bible Institutes. Anywhere in English.

I believe, having seen the books, that they would be excellent tools for anyone preparing for ministry and dealing with the challenges that it presents in the grace and workings of God for such lives. And the next time you seek Karen Pascoe and the Pascoe family, thank you for their loving ministry and support through this long and personal project that will benefit the lives and ministries of thousands of brothers and sisters IN Christ! ~ Joe Walsh
